Hello, As I stand here in the center of Monument Valley, Arizona, I am reminded there are no trees. Just these towering spires of stone, and and sagebrush. I am also reminded that not far from here, south and east of the Painted Desert is the petrified forest. Once there were many trees and over time they disappeared along with the dinosaurs.
So as time has changed this vast landscape, so has time changed my outlook and style. It has been said, that character can be described like a block of wood. There is hard grain and soft grain. It is the blending of the hard and the soft that makes me mindful of who I am.
Passion comes from the soul and when I start working with the soft and the hard I have to remember it is the character that defines me and my integrity.
I have been creating most of my life. Born to a self educated mechanical engineer with a 5th grade education, my father was the foundation for my early learning. My mother tempered my passions by instilling in me her love and practice of creating art. If it not for both my loving parents guidance I might have never known the true beauty that comes from creation.
I have been rich and poor in the true sense of the word. My early projects were dedicated to enhancing my life by making furnishing for our home. Trying to keep up with two daughters and what they were teaching me to be a daddy also helped me in creating useful projects to make their lives happy.
It was this inspiration that was the foundation and beginnings that transformed my hobby to professional status. I owe much to my past. For one can never step forward, unless you know where you have been.
The Coat of Arms you see on the right of this page represent my heritage. They signify that I am a combination of many cultures. For the present and the future they define and have become the theme for this place. As well as the art I create and see through my eyes.
I strive for perfection in all I do. Some times I succumb to failure, like when a bowl flies off the lathe. However I have learned to pick up the pieces and try again. For one can never know what will transpire with out taking the risk of trying. To that
I am a simple turner. I hope my work will inspire new generations to my craft and it will forever be passed on for all to enjoy.
